Mark Mangino has been out of coaching since 2009, but his name has made a few appearances in the rumor mill over the past couple of months.

Now, he's found a landing spot with his alma mater, Youngstown State. Mangino will serve as the Penguins' assistant (to the) head coach and tight ends coach.

"This is a homecoming for me," Mangino said in a statement. "I'm delighted to be at a great school with a great football tradition with a team and coach poised to do great things. Every coaching job I have ever taken was a rebuilding project, but this program is not rebuilding. This program has the potential to have a very good year and that's a credit to Eric Wolford, his staff and his team.

"I am a big believer in Coach Wolford's 'no shortcuts' approach that focuses on getting results on and off the field. This school is near and dear to my heart and I'll work very hard with Coach Wolford to get the job done."

Mangino was a former assistant at YSU under Jim Tressel from 1985-87.

Mangino coached Kansas from 2002-09 and compiled a 50-48 record before resigning amidst an internal investigation into his alleged mistreatment of football players. Still, Mangino guided the Jayhawks to success on the football field rarely seen in Lawrence, going 12-1 in 2007 that resulted in an Orange Bowl win.

Mangino has recently been connected to the Colorado head coaching job and the offensive line job at Oklahoma. Those would go to Mike Macintyre and Bill Bedenbaugh, respectively.
