Alex Gimenez, hired by the Boston Bruins in July as a director of hockey operations, has died.
The Bruins announced his passing on social media on Friday but did not state a cause of death. His age was not immediately known.
“The Boston Bruins are deeply saddened to share the passing of our colleague Alex Gimenez,” general manager Don Sweeney said in a statement.
“Alex joined our team in July as Director of Hockey Operations, Collective Bargaining Agreement. Although Alex’s time with the Bruins was far too brief, his intelligence, thoughtfulness and character were evident from the moment he joined us.
“Alex earned the respect of all who knew and worked with him throughout his career and, most importantly, he was a wonderful person who will be greatly missed.”
The Bruins announced his hiring on July 14 and said his job would include contract negotiations, salary cap management, CBA compliance and player acquisition strategy.
Gimenez was a 2015 Cornell graduate who began his career in sports media before transitioning to work with teams and leagues. He served as a labor relations intern for Major League Baseball after graduation, then was hired later in 2015 by the Boston Red Sox. He worked a variety of front-office jobs for the Red Sox until his promotion to assistant director of major league operations and pro scouting in November 2023. He stayed in that role until this past January, when he went to work as manager of hockey analytics and strategy for the Professional Women’s Hockey League.
The Red Sox also issued a statement.
“Alex was an integral member of our baseball operations for over a decade, and forever a part of our Red Sox family,” the club posted to X. “We are absolutely heartbroken by this news and send our love to Alex’s family.”
